Riders - Storm Tips by Klaas Voget
During this period of preparation for the Red Bull Storm Chase, slowly some more practical questions merge into our brains. How does an experienced storm-ripper prepare himself for such a unique day of the year? We asked Germans hard core waver Klaas Voget for some stormy advices:
1. "Equipment?"
"On a day like this I grab the smallest equipment I have, smallest waveboard, my two smallest sails (3.5, 4.0)...two 370 masts, an extra boom and spare fins. The main issue is about control at the limit which is assured by using the smallest material you have!"
2. "The straight Tip?!"
"While packing my stuff, I assume the risk of broken material on a day like this. Being well informed about high- and low tide on the spot I picked can be essential to safe energy to catch the ultimate conditions. My cellphone with loaded battery and a first aid kid can be useful as well. There´s one thing everybody should definitely make sure on those days: always have a good buddy joining you! On the day X for the Red Bull Storm Chase there is a whole camera team watching out for. So no worries about that!"
3. "Personal feelings?"
"Those days are really exciting for me. I hardly catch any sleep the nights before. If an epic day with 10+ bft is announced, my blood pressure is on alert status already. There´s one thing I know for sure: nobody should overestimate his skills and there´s no way of underestimating a storm like this. But anyway, I can´t wait...!"
