Rider - Introducing Storm Chaser Ireland #2 - Oisin van Gelderen

Time to introduce the riders! Oisin van Gelderen, age 35. One of the most experienced windsurfers in the Storm Chase, knowing the irish storm conditions since twenty years!

Which spots work in high winds and which wind directions?
My choice would be to try and sail several spots in 1 or 2 days:
Elly Beach, Belmullet, Co. Mayo  - South, SE,  or W-NW.
Easkey, Co. Sligo.  SW-W with N swell
Various Secret Spots north of Sligo town.  SW with N swell
Achill, Co. Mayo,  W-NW

How did you promote yourself to become a Red Bull Storm Chaser?
Through emailing everyone I knew (between around 800 emails), and asking them to email everyone they knew !  (50,000??) I also sent SMS messages to everyone I knew who I didn’t have email addresses for (another 250) asking them to vote and spread the word.  I arranged radio interviews in Dublin to try and get more votes, sent information and action pics to newspapers and magazines, emailed windsurfing and other forums.  I set up and posted pics to a myspace site, my own blog, and website to promote the Red Bull Storm Chase.  I went into businesses through work, and introduced myself and the event, and asked them to vote for me.  Also everyone that I met at the beach, or while driving around.. in fact I just asked everyone !!  I also gave out Storm Chase stickers, and cans of Red Bull to selected people to help them talk about this great idea and spread the word.

Comment: your best/worst storm experience so far?

Sailing double mast high in Brandon Bay, on 3.3m.   So many days in the Autumn in Ireland on 3.3, and some when it’s TOO windy !
