Intermission until mid-July

As of March 22nd, the first part of the two standby periods for 2013 has ended.

The hunt for suitable storms will be resumed in mid-July. This intermission has been scheduled since the inception of the 2013 extension, as the probability for suitable storms during this timeframe is very low.

It has possibly been the most radical day in windsurfing history. With wind speeds peaking at over 70 knots and angry, 20-ft waves, athletes pulled off ginormous moves.

They say only the strongest will survive, so what does it take to tackle the perfect storm?

Ireland whipped the Atlantic Ocean into a frenzy and these ten heroes not only managed to push the limits of storm sailing, but actually put on a mesmerising show of sky-high jumps and thrilling wave rides as well. Let's meet them and see what's required to make it such a spectacle.

Ireland - Mission 1 Roundup

After a ground-breaking day of hurricane-strength windsurfing, six sailors - Browne, Bruch, Fernandez, Swift, Taboulet & Traversa - advance to Mission 2.

With wind speeds peaking at over 70 knots and angry, 20-ft waves, the ten competitors on Mission 1 completed three rounds of competition at two spots in Brandon Bay.

Red Bull Storm Chase in 2013

Red Bull Storm Chase unluckily caught a calm storm season this year.

The original plan was to complete the event and crown the Storm Chaser of the year before the end of the waiting period, which was two weeks ago on Nov 30, 2012. But as it turned out, none of the three aimed missions had been accomplished by then.

Red Bull Storm Chase is back on standby, now that the 2012 PWA World Tour has finished. The wait for storms continues.

Week 3 of the Waiting Period

The third week of the Red Bull Storm Chase waiting period (Aug 1 till Nov 30) has passed.

There's been a lot of excitement due the attempted mission to Tasmania. A lot of preparation had already been completed, when it was decided to wait for a better opportunity instead on Sunday...

Week 2 of the Waiting Period

The second week of the Red Bull Storm Chase waiting period (Aug 1 till Nov 30) has passed.

All 7 selected destinations remained at the (lowest) warning level "Guarded" over the last week. Nevertheless quite a lot has happened, and the upcoming week 3 of the waiting period looks even more promising.

Week 1 of the Waiting Period

The first week of the Red Bull Storm Chase waiting period (Aug 1 till Nov 30) has passed.

It's been a tense start, as two possible destinations had already been marked with the warning level "Elevated", which means that the crew has a very close look at developing weather systems nearby.
